      Thanksgiving 2011: A Game-Changer for Mobile Payments?

      • Edit

      • Autopost

A new report from InMobi has concluded that 60 million subscribers will shop via mobile over Thanksgiving 2011.  In Google's latest book, Winning The Zero Moment of Truth, trends clearly indicate that consumers are using their smartphone devices more often to research products, seek retailer information and shop.

For retailers, this is a clear signal that mobile has become the new imperative to conduct business today.  As more consumers reach for their handsets to research and make purchasing decisions, retailers face a market urgency to deploy a mobile strategy as soon as possible. Whether retailers pursue a mobile website or native app strategy, access to retailer products and services must move beyond information and pricing to include transaction capability.

What has been a far too recurring theme in business is one where some businesses adopt a "wait and see" attitude towards emerging trends which then snowball into an avalanche of competition. By then, the same businesses are scrambling to deploy an "ad hoc" strategy under adverse market conditions where main competitors have already deployed their mobile strategy and are capturing revenue as a result.  That is a position few laggard businesses want to be in.

The perfect storm has already arrived.  Consumers, en masse, are using smartphone handsets for everything from reading to gaming to research and price and product comparison shopping.  In a world of physical and digital products or services, the missing link for many merchants has been the ability to capture revenues from smartphone handsets.

The InMobi study provides additional findings:

      • 45% of users plan to compare prices from their handset on Thanksgiving weekend
      • 36% plan to purchase directly from their handsets
      • 42% plan to shop and research sales on their handset on CyberMonday (primarily an online PC shopping day)

The shift away from desktop PC-based shopping on CyberMonday 2011 is the tipping point that retailers have been looking for in the mobile channel.

      Other study findings include:

      • 29% of users will look to their smartphones to learn about new products and services
      • 27% will use their handset when making a purchasing decision
      • 15% will use their mobile handset make a purchase while in store

Clearly, consumers are performing research and transactions in the moment and on the go and retailers need to be in a position to support this behavior.

On the information search side, the types of searches consumers are expected to perform from their smartphone include the following:

      • 31% plan to monitor sales and promotions
      • 27% plan to look up retain locations and hours
      • 26% plan to research product information and availability
      • 26% plan to review product photos
      • 18% plan to search for retailer-brand native applications
      • 17% plan to use their smartphone for customer support

Based on the study's own findings, any retailer that has not incorporated a mobile strategy which may include a  fast mobile website for on-the-go information searching is at risk of losing revenue opportunities to the competition.

In the end, retailers must become increasingly focused and committed to delivering compelling customer experiences through smartphones that not only deliver necessary information to consumers but allows them to make a purchase without resorting to desktop/laptop connections.

Explosive Growth Expected for Smartphone-Based Mobile Donations

      • Edit

      • Autopost

"Follow the money" was a classic catch-phrase used in "All the President's Men" to help Woodward and Bernstein sharpen their focus during the Watergate scandal.  The same could be said for mobile donations.

However, in the area of non-profit fundraising, there has been a surprising lack of focus with respect to mobile donations (mobile giving) on smartphone handsets.  The growth of smartphones and their adoption has been one of the largest catalysts for change in two key industries -- payments and telecom -- which undeniably changes the manner in which consumers interact with non-profit organizations.

In the period ending September 2011, Comscore reported that 87.4 million Americans owned smartphones which was up twelve percent from the preceding three month period.  With mobile phone penetration at 103.9% penetration in the U.S. market alone, trends clearly indicate that accepting mobile donations through mobile phones today presents a perfect timing opportunity for non-profits to improve fundraing efforts across the board.

Recent surveys have uncovered that most nonprofits still use email marketing and social media in their engagement strategy with only 16% planning to have mobile websites or 19% planning to deploy mobile applications in an effort to boost mobile giving. It appears that the road ahead for non-profits is a long one but it doesn't have to be.

Many speculative reasons have been discussed for the adoption lag with non-profits. Everything from high costs, to unfamiliar risks, to limited staff resources which are largely unfounded.  More and more non-profits have finally realized that mobile donation options must be given to consumers with the best instrument that suits them best. What is the best instrument? Mobile websites or smartphone applications.

In a Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association Study from April 2011, survey results confirmed that 75% of users would donate $20 or more and 32% would give $50 or more if they were not hindered by text donor methods.

Two Current Examples of Donor Limitations

An overwhelming number of non-profits use email marketing for engagement but ignore current market realities and trends.  A perfect example includes a typical supporter that receives a non-profit's email blast with a call-to-action directed to their website for donations.  On a smartphone, many donors find action difficult because the website isn't configured for smartphone use and includes far too many engagement steps to make mobile giving feasible because the user's viewpoint was not considered.  What results is undeniable drop-off in completing the call-to-action (donations!) because most mobile users are not going to remember or both to visit the non-profit's website on their computer at another time.

Text-to-Give also limits the opportunity for non-profits.  The net result is smaller donation amounts for non-profits and a host of other limitations.

      Text-to-Give Limitations:

      • Donations limited to $5 and $10
      • Donations are not received by the non-profits quickly
      • Donor information is not collected by non-profits
      • Availability based on size of charity
      • Considered a short-term solution versus a long-term strategy

ULTIMATELY, the key is to provide a seamless and consistent user experience that transcends technology.

Consumers and smartphone users today want simplicity, convenience and willingly want to donate for good causes and share their donor activity in social media networks.  A text-to-give model does not support the viral aspects of mobile giving.

Admeris' secure OneTouch Mobile Payments solution helps nonprofits capture this growing mobile audience that is constantly connected to their device.  Further, Admeris' smart rendering technology enables nonprofits to display properly formatted donor payment pages to over 1300 mobile handsets (feature and smartphone).  As well, donors are not limited to specific donor amounts, like $5 and $10, but can donate any amount including recurring donations.  Nonprofits of any size can take advantage of Admeris' online and mobile commerce platform and receive donor settlements quickly compared to other methods available today.

If you're a non-profit, Admeris' mobile payment solution can help you achieve greater donor level targets, quickly and easily with a few lines of code at competitive fees to accelerate smartphone web payments.

CyberMonday 2011: A Compelling Opportunity for Mobile Payments (MCommerce)

      • Edit

      • Tags
      • Autopost

CyberMonday 2011 Ripe for MCommerce Success!

Many have heard it but what does it really mean?  Coined in 2005, CyberMonday was built as a marketing concept to persuade consumers to shop on the Monday following the Friday after US Thanksgiving.  Not surprisingly, sales increased substantially with each passing CyberMonday event.

In a self-fulfilling manner, CyberMonday has become a serious bazaar for online discounts and promotions.  We've all heard the stories of game publishers unlocking massive discounts for their entire portfolio of mobile apps on CyberMonday resulting in volume sales and a fresh influx of new customers to be targeted for future product releases.  It truly is a diamond field opportunity for merchants.

Certainly, online ecommerce has been the key driver for higher sales conversion across merchants in an extremely difficult market environment.  What's been largely ignored in the media is the current, real economic opportunity available to merchants of any size with mobile payment solutions that exist today.

There has never been a better time to put a stake in the ground with mcommerce.  Admeris' secure, OneTouch mobile payment platform enables consumers to transact easily and quickly without complex account sign-up and sign-in requirements.  Merchants understand that consumers are time-constrained when on the go.  Consumers already use their smartphones to do critical research based on location and through product comparisons within mobile apps.  What has been missing is a quick and easy way to complete the loop with a mobile payment transaction.

Google recently released a book called "The Zero Moment of Truth" that speaks to customer behavior defined today by "digital exploration".  Consumers now go online to seek out ratings, social media-based peer reviews, videos and in-depth product details. As Google puts it, the face of shopping has changed. What isn't discussed is that all this research and interaction is now being done on smartphones at a much greater pace than ever before.  The tipping point is near where smartphones will take the role of "online decision-making" to make it a "mobile decision" -- in order to complete that cycle, mobile payments must be part of the equation to be successful.

In December 2010, comScore noted a 16% increase in CyberMonday online sales compared to the previous year or $1 billion plus sales in the heaviest online shopping day in history. Ebay reported a 146% increase in mobile sales in 2010 powered by iPhone and iOS devices.

Merchants have an amazing opportunity to implement and leverage mobile into their overall business plans with a mobile payment solution which supports browser-based payments in addition to in-app payments for goods or services.  Admeris' robust API and documentation suite helps merchants succeed today, not tomorrow, and not some day in the future when the stars become aligned. Admeris helps merchants of any size leverage mcommerce today.  Our powerful platform includes ecommerce and mobile ecommerce through the same payment gateway providing an integrated merchant management reporting console with options to process in Visa, Mastercard, Discover, AMEX and Interac Online.

Our robust developer center contains documentartion, APIs and shopping cart plugins to help merchants and developers deploy quickly and easily.  For more information, visit the Admeris Developer Center here: http://bit.ly/s8AVUn

Breakeven Inc. Partners With Admeris to Launch Mobile Donation Software

Recent Natural Disasters and Difficult Economic Environment Highlight Important Need for Non-Profits to Support Causes through Mobile Channel

      TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2011) -

      Attention: Business and Technology Editors

Admeris is pleased to announce their partnership with Breakeven Inc., a game-changing provider of Cloud computing solutions for nonprofit organizations. Its CauseView platform is a cost-effective and intuitive way for nonprofit organizations (NPOs) to develop, track and maintain long-term relationships necessary to sustain fundraising and engage volunteers.

In June, a Kaptivate Group study noted that half of all nonprofits will adopt mobile in 2012 to drive donations. In the US alone, mobile is fast becoming today's preferred donation method with nearly 300 million mobile users and smartphones outnumbering computers three to one. Mobile donations have already started to displace previous records when compared to online donations. In its second year, online donations raised $300,000 followed by $10 million in the third year. However, mobile donations raised $500,000 in the first year and close to $40 million in the third year. The most interesting trend to date based on Kaptivate's report confirms that the mobile web is growing while SMS connectivity as a method for mobile donations is waning. According to a Quorus Research study, 75% of "interested" donors would give $20 or more and 32% would give $50 or more if they were not hindered by SMS text donations which limit the donor amounts to $5 and $10 only.

Breakeven's CauseView application was developed for use with the Salesforce.com, an award-winning customer relationship management service, and is specially configured to meet the needs of nonprofits to sync their website, database and payment gateway in a simple, efficient and effective manner. CauseView's key benefits include its cloud integration, allowing users to view, share and edit all their data in one place, online and accessible from anywhere. For NPOs, the end result is maximized productivity and lower infrastructure costs.

Jim Brown, VP Business Development for Admeris said, "Nonprofits have hidden challenges beyond meeting fundraising targets which include limited resources to leverage new channels and perceived expense in adopting and maintaining a mobile presence. Admeris' secure OneTouch mobile payment platform makes it easy for mobile users to donate easily and securely without the need for any account. For Breakeven Inc. a few lines of code are all that is needed to implement secure OneTouch mobile phone payment pages through its cloud-based CauseView platform. Now donors can donate any amount they wish for a cause and even setup a recurring donation relationship if they wish. NPO's benefit by gaining additional information such as email and physical address information to help build an ongoing relationship with a donor."

Ian Hayes, President for Breakeven Inc. added, "We've seen a dramatic rise in demand for mobile donations and we researched the market extensively for mobile payment solutions that would help us. Admeris' full end-to-end secure mobile payment platform allows us to use their online and mobile payment gateway solution to process donations through our CauseView platform. We're excited to take the lead in mobile giving because we believe in changing the world by connecting people to meaningful causes".

The completed integration of Admeris' secure mobile platform with the ClearView Cloud-based platform, will be available at the Association of Fundraising Professionals' (AFP) Greater Toronto Chapter's annual Congress and Showcase 2011, held on November 28-30th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, North Building, Hall C.

Interac Online Merchant Processing from Admeris -- Just in Time for the Holidays

      • Autopost

In 1984, the Interac Association was founded as a venture between Canada's financial institutions with the express purpose of exchanging electronic financial information.  The original founding insitutions included the Royal Bank of Canada, CIBC, Scotiabank, TD Bank and Desjardins. By 2005, there were 80 member organizations with over 600,000 ABMs / ATMs that could be accessed through the Interac network.

For Canadians, Interac has become synonymous with convenience, security and peace of mind at the retail checkout counter.  Canadians have also proven to be very flexible to new payment methods that simplify their transaction experience.

      Some recent quotes:

An estimated $90 billion in cash payments are for purchases under $20 and Canadians are increasingly willing to pay with plastic, Interac said.

“Canadians have always shown an interest in adopting new payment solutions,” said Doug Collins, head of payments and bank services for RBC Royal Bank.

“Simplifying day-to-day banking through introducing innovative products and services is a key priority for us and we are pleased to be bringing this new option to our clients.”

Direct debit payments have been embraced by Canadians since it was introduced as Interac Direct Payment in 1994.  In fact, it reached a flashpoint in 2001 when more transactions were completed by debit cards than cash.

From Interac's own website, the statistics clearly highlight the growing trend of interac debit transactions since 2005.

Interac Online allows consumers to pay for goods and services over the Internet with personal banking funds. Available since 2005, Interac Online has become increasingly popular for merchants (less chargeback risk) and consumers who sometimes prefer to pay direct from their bank account vs. charging to a credit card.

Admeris Payment Systems is a leading provider of online and mobile commerce solutions for merchant businesses of any size.  If you're interested in adding Interac Online to your transaction mix, contact us at 1-866-854-9851 ext. 705 or email us at sales@admeris.com.  You can even request a quote here: https://signup.admeris.com/quoteGet.jsp

We offer Interac Online, VISA, Mastercard, American Express and Discover with extremely competitive discount rates.  Further, we are PCI-compliant thereby saving your business thousands of dollars and hours in PCI-compiance requirements to handle transaction data.  Further, our hosted solution allows you to keep the customer in your shopping cart rather than being directed to some other branded website to complete the transaction.

Our developer center provides rich detail for e-commerce and m-commerce solutions to help power your business.  Please visit our developer center: http://www.admeris.com/developers/ for more information.

Our patent-pending Secure OneTouch mobile payment platform also helps merchants drive higher sales conversions from customers using their phones.  We support web payments on 1300 smartphone and feature phones with properly rendered payment pages and provide APIs to support your in-app payment strategy for Apple's iOS platform, Google's Android platform or Research In Motion's Blackberry series devices.

Secure OneTouch from Admeris drives the power of simplicity and convenience for both merchants and consumers.  Merchants can instantly format payment pages for 1300 mobile phones with a few lines of code and consumers can benefit from a secure, onetouch experience where repeat transactions from the same merchant only require a CVV or PIN code because their device is instantly identified with encrypted card credentials to complete the transaction quickly.

Consider Admeris' online e-commerce solutions to power your business with Interac Online payment and credit card processing.  When your business is ready to take advantage of the next opportunity, consider Admeris' easy to implement mobile payment solution to process more transactions from consumer phones.  Don't leave money on the table with a customer who visits your online retail business and has no easy way to BUY from you.  Merchants also benefit from an integrated merchant management reporting console to report all online ecommerce and mobile ecommerce transactions.

Consider Admeris Payment Systems this holiday season and watch your sales grow beyond your expectations!
